What Budget Motels has taught me about business relationships

When most people think about the accommodation industry, they think about rooms, occupancy rates, marketing, and bookings.
After a decade working with Budget Motels, I've learned that the most important part of the business isn't any of those things.
It's relationships.
Over the years, I've worked with motel owners from all walks of life. Some operate large properties, some manage small family-run businesses, and all face their own unique opportunities and challenges. While every property is different, one thing remains consistent: people like to do business with people they trust.
One of the biggest lessons Budget Motels has taught me is that business relationships are built over time. They are rarely created through a single meeting, phone call, or marketing campaign. Instead, they are developed through consistency, reliability, and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed.
Like many organisations, Budget Motels has experienced change throughout its history. The accommodation industry has evolved, customer expectations have shifted, and technology has transformed the way guests book and travel. Through all of these changes, the strongest relationships have endured because they were built on trust rather than convenience.
I have also learned that listening is often more valuable than talking. Some of the most productive conversations I've had with members were not about telling them what to do, but simply understanding their challenges, frustrations, and goals. People want to know that they are being heard and that their concerns matter.
Another lesson has been that every business is different. What works for one motel may not work for another. Successful relationships require understanding the unique circumstances, priorities, and objectives of the people you are working with rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution.
Perhaps the most important lesson of all is that relationships need to be nurtured. They cannot be taken for granted. Trust takes years to build and only moments to lose. Small actions, regular communication, and a willingness to support people when they need it most often have a greater impact than any marketing campaign or business initiative.
Today, whether I am working with members, suppliers, colleagues, customers, or stakeholders, I still apply the lessons Budget Motels has taught me. Build trust. Listen carefully. Be consistent. Follow through on your commitments.
Because at the end of the day, successful businesses are not built on transactions.
They are built on relationships.
